Department Description

The mission of the Bradford County Conservation District is to lead, educate, and empower people to manage resources wisely.

Pennsylvania’s conservation districts, established in 1945 under the Conservation District Law, are the local unit of state government that provides the link between the citizens and the multitude of local, state and federal natural resource management programs and agencies. A volunteer board of directors is appointed by the county commissioners from nominations received from county-wide organizations. Non-voting associate directors, who serve on committees and engage in other board activities, are appointed by the Conservation District Board. A staff of professionals provides information, technical and financial assistance, educational programs and support at the direction of the Board of Directors.

Services Provided

Conservation districts operate under the belief that conservation works best when local people, those who live and work in the area, play an active role in managing their natural resources. Because conservation districts are familiar with local issues, they are able to identify and prioritize actions needed to manage the resources of a particular area.
The directors and staff of the Bradford County Conservation District stand ready to offer technical assistance and educational guidance to land owners and managers, local governments, teachers, students and people from every walk of life. Some of the programs and services available include:

  • Environmental education
  • Erosion and sedimentation pollution control
  • Storm water management
  • Floodplain monitoring
  • Dirt and gravel roads pollution prevention
  • Nutrient management
  • Chesapeake Bay program
  • Watershed protection
  • Beneficial use of bio-solids
  • Waterway and wetlands protection
