he District Attorney prepares and presents cases before the court and sets policies for criminal prosecution and law enforcement. A victim and witness assistance program is handled through the District Attorney's Office with state funding. The office has one investigator, the county detective. The first assistant District Attorney also serves chair of the Criminal Justice Advisory Board. The CJAB consists of representatives from all offices and agencies that are in any way involved with criminals serving as a clearing house for information providing a coordinated approach to seeking grants.

District Attorney
Daniel Barrett:
Dan Barrett serves as District Attorney, directing all criminal prosecutions, two assistant DA’s and four supporting staff. Dan was elected in 2007, twenty years after his first term as District Attorney in the 1980’s when it was a part time position. He “retired” from thirty years of private practice to become the first elected full time District Attorney in 2008. A county native Dan resides in Athens with his wife. They have three grown children.
